Wieck & Greifswald

A stroll through the historic city, a sailing tour or a daytrip to Rügen – our hotel is due to its central location, the best starting point for various activities.

Wieck

The over 800 year old, ancient fishing village Wieck is a district of the Hanseatic and University City of Greifswald. It is located at the mouth of river Ryck, which is floating into the Bay of Greifswald, also called the Danish Wiek. Its most famous landmark is the bridge in Wieck, one of the oldest, still operating wooden bascule bridges in Europe.

In the summer time, Wieck serves as the most popular recreational area for the people living in Greifswald. Especially the bathing beach in Eldena, only a few foot steps away from our hotel, attracts numerous vacationer as well as bathers from Greifswald and its environment.

Every third weekend in July, the traditional „Fischerfest Gaffelrigg“ takes place in Greifswald-Wieck. With a range of 50.000 visitors, it is the second largest fair in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, besides Rostocker Hanse Sail. The utterly highlight is the regatta with traditional ships of Greifswald’s museums harbour, joined by foreign traditional sailors and pleasure crafts.

Hanseatic City of Greifswald

The foundation of the city is referring back to the cloister in Eldena, which was established by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. It became famous and gained worldwide glory through the paintings made by Caspar David Friedrich. He was born in Greifswald and the constantly recurring image of the cloister made it to THE symbol of romanticism.

The medieval church towers of all three, gothic brick churches St. Marien, St. Nikolai and St. Jakobi have been shaping the old city’s silhouette since hundreds of years.

In 1456 the university was established and is one of the oldest in Central Europe. Thanks to the university, Greifswald is young and alive. About 12.000 students from all over the world are the reason for an international atmosphere. Beyond that Greifswald’s culture and nightlife have an excellent reputation. Science and research at the University of Greifswald have been producing worldwide relevance and recognition.
